How to Win
Friends and Influence People
by
Dale Carnegie. A Happiness and
Relationships Self Help Book Review
If you want people to like you and respect you, How to Win Friends and
Influence People by Dale Carnegie is a must read. The book lays out
31
timeless human relations principals and illustrates how they work with
examples from real people, some famous and some not.
Although the book is written for business leaders, it applies to every
relationship including friends and family. The style is
conversational and includes lots of stories of people using the
principals effectively.
| You can make more friends in two months by
becoming more interested in other people than you can in two years by
trying to get people interested in you. |
Dale Carnegie started working on the book about 100 years ago when his
attempts to write the great American Novel failed. He noticed that many
adults were looking for help on how to get ahead. They wanted to build
skills in public speaking and leadership so they could participate more
fully in their companies and their communities. To answer
this need, he started teaching courses at the YMCA in New York City on
human relations. After searching thoroughly for a text book and finding
none, he wrote his own- this book.
| Criticism of others is futile and if you indulge in
it often you should be warned that it can be fatal to your career. |
The courses were so successful, that the classes are still given today
in much the same format as those in the 1920s. Students learn each of
the human relations principals, then give a 2 minute speech to the
class on how they applied them or why they are important. Most students
find great improvements in their personal and professional lives after
the classes.
| Flattery is from the teeth out. Sincere
appreciation is from the heart out. |
Like most classic truths, the 10 human relations principals and 21
leadership principals are easy to say and difficult to do. The stories
not only add interest to the material but illustrate the how and why of
each principal in fascinating and moving vignettes that bring the
principals into clear focus.
| If
you want to win friends, make it a point to remember them. If you
remember my name, you pay me a subtle compliment; you indicate that I
have made an impression on you. Remember my name and you add to my
feeling of importance. |
These principals are not designed to be quick fixes, but it is amazing
how their application can rapidly improve relationships that have often
seemed difficult or beyond repair.
Science shows us that happy people have a large, diverse social
network. Good relationships are an important key to a happy life.
If you need help winning friends and keeping them, then this book is a
must read. How to Win Friends and Influence People
is readable, based
on scientific research, uses personal experience, and holds your
interest.
