Martin Luther King

and Happiness

Although Dr. Martin Luther King is best known for his civil rights speeches and fight for social justice in the American South during the 1960s, his words and wisdom supported much of what we now know about happiness science. In a time when many called for violent social change, he advocated for peace, love, compassion and creative, non-violent approaches. In this, he was very much like the Dalai Lama today.

Dr. King was also well known for his wonderful laugh and his tendency to laugh often, as noted in this first hand account from Ebony.

Martin Luther King and James Dean
Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

We must combine the toughness of the serpent and the softness of the dove, a tough mind and a tender heart.
