Although Dr. King is best known for his civil rights
speeches and fight for social justice in the American South during the
1960s, his words and wisdom supported much of what we now know about
happiness science.
In a time when many called for violent social change, he advocated for
peace, love, compassion and creative, non-violent approaches. In this,
he was very much like the Dalai Lama today.
Those who are not looking
for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are
searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness
for others.
Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.
The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and
cruelty by the bad
people but the silence over that by the good people.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can
do that. Hate cannot
drive out hate; only love can do that.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that
matter.
Life's most persistent and urgent question is,
What are you doing for
others?
If you lose hope, somehow
you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to
be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today
I still have a dream.
Faith is taking the first step even when you don't
see the whole
staircase.
We must learn to live together as brothers or we are
going to perish together as fools.
Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek,
but a means by which
we arrive at that goal.
We must
combine the toughness of the serpent and the softness of the
dove, a tough mind and a tender heart.
The
ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort
and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and
controversy.
Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice
at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.
An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow
confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all
humanity.
Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are
you doing for others? This quotable mug makes a great gift for the
helpers and service folks in your life.
