Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #069- When I Sing
July 07, 2010
Hello

Sing to Lift Your Mood.

God respects me when I work; but God loves me when I sing.

Rabindranath Tagore

As I write this tip of the week, I can hear the Delaware National Guard Marching Band practicing Sousa Marches. Marching band music always lifts my mood and my energy level and makes me smile. I have read that the song Happy Birthday is the most sung song in the world and I expect it is because it is tradition to sing in celebration. We whistle or hum to ourselves when we are happy. People sing the blues to feel better. Singing is one of those universal human things we do when we are happy.

Scientists have confirmed that we can influence our emotions by acting the way we want to feel, so it follows that singing, like smiling, is one of the ways we can act to feel better.

I also find that catching myself singing is one of the ways I measure whether I am happy or not. I notice that when I frequently find myself humming, I am more tolerant and easy going. I am more likely to compliment than criticize.

So, put a smile on your face and a song in your heart and…

Sing to Lift Your Mood.

Affirmation
I sing everyday.

Journal or Meditation Question
How often do I catch myself singing, humming, or thinking of songs? What songs lift my mood? What songs remind me of celebrations or get my feet tapping? What songs bring a smile to my face and a spring to my step?
