Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #124- Stream of Life
August 10, 2011

Connect to the stream of life then follow the dance to find joy in the world.

The same stream of life that runs through my veins night and day runs through the world and dances in rhythmic measures.

Rabindranath Tagore

Hello Friends,

A recently released study observed that the happiest people did not think about being happy, they just were happy. I absolutely agree with this observation. In my greatest moments of happiness, I stop thinking at all it seems. This state of happiness, often called flow , comes from being completely connected to the moment and the world around us. It takes us out of our own heads.

Most of us have experienced these peak moments a few times, but we do not live in this state. Even the happiest among us have times of sadness or anger or fear. Experiencing and acknowledging these negative emotions is as critical to our happiness as flow. The key is to be aware of the emotion of the moment, take appropriate action, then return to our regular level of happiness.

We can also choose to take actions that are more likely to lead to happiness than to negative emotions. For example, we can choose to connect to the present moment and the dance of life around us rather than choosing to dwell on the hurts of the past in any given moment. We can focus on the larger world, rather than just our own thoughts, and we can look for the beauty in the patterns, rather than focus on the fear of uncertainty. When we do, it usually changes our experience of the moment and influences our choices for the future.

So the next time you are feeling blue, take the time to understand why, respond appropriately, then choose to recover your happiness.

Connect to the stream of life then follow the dance to find joy in the world.

Affirmation
I experience my emotions as they happen. I am open to all emotions and I choose actions that lead to positive emotions often.

Journal or Meditation Question
Do I allow myself to experience all of my emotions as they occur? Am I aware of my emotions most of the time? Which emotions are easier for me to notice, positive or negative? Is that what I choose?
