Set Yourself Up for Peace, Love, and Happiness with Goals

To achieve happiness, we should make certain that we are never without an important goal.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hello Friends,

Whether you read the business literature, the self help pages, motivational tips, or philosophy, this truth about goals seems to come up over and over again- there is a magic to the simple act of setting a goal.

Perhaps it is because setting a goal is an act of optimism- based on the twin beliefs that:

  1. our lives could be better, and
  2. we have the power to make them so.
Perhaps it is because goals focus our energy and help us develop a sense of flow and involvement- a key pathway to happiness. Or, perhaps it is the thrill and pleasure of achievement that makes goals so effective in increasing our sense of well being. Whatever the cause, the end result is clear- the simple act of setting goals helps us be happier and achieve more.

Although happiness is a spontaneous feeling, we can increase our happiness by setting goals to develop happier habits or seek out happier circumstances more often. For example, goals that deepen or improve our relationships with other people, or focus our activities on our strengths can enhance our happy lives.

We can increase our goal effectiveness simply by writing them down. Other factors that help our goals help us are:

  • State the goal in positive terms like I will eat smaller portions at each meal instead of I will not overeat
  • Create a clear, sensory vision of what will happen when you achieve your goal. Include tastes, smells, feelings, sights and sounds as much as possible.
  • Remind yourself of your goal often.
