Pursue Happiness with Strengths and Virtues for a Sustainably Happy LifeDear Friends; This week, people in the United States celebrate their independence and these famous words by Thomas Jefferson. Yet the phrase life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness actually comes from the ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus. Clearly, the pursuit of happiness is a deeply rooted human need no matter what your nationality or political philosophy. Try these Tools and Tips for Happiness to enhance your pursuit. In this global economy, the relationship between a happy life and a good life is more important than ever. Science shows that our sustainable happiness is not based in our pursuit of individual pleasure, but in our exercise of our strengths and virtues for a worthy cause outside ourselves. For pleasure and a moving example of one man's search for a better life, you might enjoy the Chris Gardener story in the movie, Pursuit of Happyness. This is a moving film about poverty, love and one man's pursuit of happiness in 1980's San Francisco. The main character is motivated by love and each successful step along his path is fueled by knowing and using his strengths and his ability to build good relations with other people. If you are looking for a good way to celebrate Independence Day this year, you might consider using one of your virtues to help someone else. Thank a veteran, or show appreciation for your good fortune by donating to a charitable organization, or do a good deed for a neighbor.
