Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #86-NOT-Happy November 03, 2010 |
HelloRise above the poor little rich boy myth with the hero's journey. Our stories can be powerful forces in shaping our perceptions of the world. Joseph Campbell spent his life studying myths from around the world and pulling out what they had in common. He found the myths that universally shape all humans. The most universal was the hero's journey. The hero sets out on a quest to find an important object and on the way discovers his own inner strength and goodness. Only the person who is pure of heart, strong and good, can complete the quest. Common examples include the search for the Holy Grail, the search for home in the Wizard of Oz , and the search for a better life in the Pursuit of Happyness. After a lifetime of studying the myths of the world, Joseph Campbell believed that happiness was the ultimate Holy Grail. He advised us all to Follow your bliss. by taking the hero's journey in our own lives. Contemporary scientists in positive psychology and spiritual leaders like the Dalai Lama agree, a happy life is the Holy Grail for our hero's journey. These same wise people also agree with Joseph Campbell that happiness is an inside job. It is not the result of external circumstances, but something we reach by having good, happy thoughts- by being pure of heart. So keep your thoughts happy, grateful, compassionate, and playful so you too can- Rise above the poor little rich boy myth with the hero's journey.Affirmation I know happiness is more important than riches and power and I pursue it every day by being good and pure of heart.
