Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #135- Masquerade As
October 26, 2011
Hello Friends,

Face your deepest fear by masquerading as your most powerful self.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Maryanne Williamson

Halloween is now the second most popular holiday in the United States. Historically, Halloween combines several ancient holy days including a celebration to honor the dead, a celebration of the unknown spirits and deities that shape our world, and a sacrifice to gods for a good harvest next year at the time when the land seems to die in winter. It has always been a time of mystery, magic, and laughing in the face of fear. To many, it has become a time to indulge in our fantasies and in large hauls of candy.

But what if our greatest fear is our power to be brilliant, gorgeous, and talented as Maryanne Williamson suggests? If so, perhaps facing our greatest fear means the fear of being god-like, of being an Angel.

Studies have shown that people are driven to be in control of their destiny. Psychology researcher Daniel Gilbert asserts that it is our thoughts about the future and controlling it that set us apart from animals. Certainly scientific studies have borne this out. People who controlled plants, or friendly visits, or unpleasant noises or small electric shocks were happier, lived longer, and experienced less pain. Sometimes we control our destiny by living down to a level we know we can achieve. We give up on trying to make a difference in our own future.

This is particularly easy to do when it seems like the world is out of our control. We cannot control the big things like the economy, or natural disasters, or illness so we stop trying to control things like our own thoughts, words, and deeds. This giving up control is a symptom of depression and left unchecked, leads to a downward spiral of mood and health.

Often, the first step in reversing this cycle is to visualize ourselves taking action and making a positive difference. We imagine we are powerful, then we believe we might be powerful, then we start to test our power for ourselves.

If you want to do more than just masquerade as an Angel and start becoming one, start by taking the path to a happy life. Focus on using your strengths and virtues for good in the world. Or try one of the other pathways to a happy life outlined in the happiness formula. Whatever pathway you choose,
