Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #071- Lift Up
July 21, 2010
Hello

Help Someone Else to Help Yourself to Happiness

If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.

Booker T. Washington

When you are feeling a little blue, what is the first thing you do? Do you reach out to a friend or treat yourself to some special pleasure? If so, you are not alone. Most of us comfort ourselves by doing something for ourselves. Yet research shows that helping someone else might be even more effective in improving our mood.

Positive psychology research shows that doing good feels good. In fact, using our strengths and virtues is a great way to consistently raise your happiness levels. Recently, this phenomena has been called the helper's high, however, philosophers and wise people throughout the ages have observed that you cannot make someone else smile without having some of it rub off on you.

There have also been several studies that show that volunteering improves a sense of well being and can relieve depression. People who volunteer in an organized and regular way often feel less pain, and, over the long term, seem to recover faster from mental illness. If you are depressed, you should still seek medical care, but consider volunteering to help others as well.

So the next time you need a little boost to your mood,
