Cultivate Happiness Everyday to Harvest a Happy Life

The only thing that endures over time is the 'Law of the Farm.' You must prepare the ground, plant the seed, cultivate, and water if you expect to reap the harvest.

Stephen Covey wrote this in The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, a time management and leadership manual. He was referring to certain goals that can only be attained by small efforts consistently over time, such as weight loss, building good relationships and implementing cultural changes in the workplace. You can not rush these activities by putting more effort in up front. Another humorous expression for the law of the farm is this- Nine women can not have a baby in a month.

The Law of the Farm definitely applies to building a happier life. Our happiness fluctuates around a set point. No matter what our circumstances, we tend to come back to that same set point as we adjust to our changing world. If we want to raise that set point, we need to make small changes in how we think and act consistently over time. Just by reminding ourselves to smile more often, or list the things we have to be grateful for whenever we feel a complaint coming on, we can make ourselves happier.
