January 17, 2011

I Have a Dream of Happy People Thriving Together in Peace and Prosperity all over the Planet.

We must learn to live together as brothers or we are going to perish together as fools.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hello Friends,
This week in the US we celebrate Martin Luther King Day. In Denver, Colorado, where I live, we celebrate with a Marade- a cross between a March and a Parade. Several years ago I was taking my 8 year old daughter and her friend to the Marade. On the way, we were listening to Dr. King's most famous speech and I was explaining why he was such an important figure. When I looked in the mirror to see the totally blank expressions of a little red haired girl and a little black skinned girl who could not understand why anyone would possibly care about the color of someone's skin, I was overcome with a wave of gratitude and awe. The dream had come true in just a generation.

This past week, I had another significant emotional moment when I heard about the shooting in Arizona at the Government in the Grocery. One of the victims was a little girl who was interested in government and was there with her mother. I too have taken my little girl to the government in the grocery here in my state many times. This time the emotions were grief and gratitude.

Just a few years ago, I was privileged to be among the million plus to watch the inauguration of President Barrack Obama- an event many see as further evidence that Dr. King's dream has come true. As I listened to him speak at the memorial for the shooting victims, I started to think about Dr. King again. He did not just dream about a day when his children would be judged by the content of their characters and not the color of their skins. He passionately pursued that dream through non-violent action.

Dr. Martin Luther King exemplified the characteristics of a happy person in the way he lived his life. He was a deeply spiritual man who used his strengths in passionate pursuit of his dream. He had many close relationships. He helped others and lived with virtue. He laughed often and he was an optimist. I believe that the more of us who live our lives this way, the better the world will be.
