Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #070- Happiness Practice
July 14, 2010
Hello

Practice Happiness so you are Ready When the Setbacks Come.

What ought one to say then as each hardship comes? I was practicing for this, I was training for this.

Epictetus

We all suffer setbacks and hardships. It is part of daily life. If we are blessed, these setbacks are small and well within our capabilities, and if we are like most people, some will knock us down temporarily. We can better our odds for being in the blessed group by practicing our skills for dealing with hardship in advance. The greater our resilience skills, the more setbacks fall within our capabilities.

Studies have repeatedly shown that happy people are better at solving problems. They are more creative, they have a better network of support in terms of good relationships with others, and they are more likely to focus on solutions rather than difficulties. A higher happiness set point also gives us a greater margin when the hard times come. We can handle more sadness and disappointment before falling into a depressed state.

We know that optimism, gratitude, compassion for others, virtue, and knowing our strengths are key components of happiness and key components of dealing well with challenge and setbacks. It is also true that these are all qualities we can practice every day. And when we do practice every day, we raise our happiness set point.

What a stroke of good luck that the very things that make the good times great also makes the bad times better too. So devote a little time and mental energy each day to your happiness practice.

Practice Happiness so you are Ready When the Setbacks Come.
