Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #007 -- Happiness-Arises...

Happiness Arises

Consider the following. We humans are social beings. We come into the world as the result of others' actions. We survive here in dependence on others. Whether we like it or not, there is hardly a moment of our lives when we do not benefit from others' activities. For this reason it is hardly surprising that most of our happiness arises in the context of our relationships with others.

Dalai Lama

A rich social network of friends and family is one of the strongest indicators of a happy life. Even before the field of positive psychology, scientists understood that we need a sense of belonging to feel satisfied and fulfilled. Abraham Maslow, who developed the hierarchy of human needs, puts belonging as a human need just above safety and shelter. To increase your happiness, skip the over-time at work or the extra chores, and go spend time with friends.

In his book, The Art of Happiness, the Dalia Lama suggests another way to start to appreciate the people in your life. Think of all the people that work so you can do the things you do. When you are shopping in the grocery store, imagine all the people who work to put the food there for you. The farmers and truck drivers, the people in the food packing plants, the janitors that sweep the floor, the marketing people that sell the food. Without them, our experiences of life would be different. When we realize how interconnected we are, it is easier to appreciate the people who support us that we never see.
