Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #072-Give
July 28, 2010
Hello

Give to others for your happy life.

Happiness is not so much in having as sharing.
We make a living by what we get, but
we make a life by what we give.

Norman MacEwan

I was annoyed when my daughter answered the phone in the middle of an exciting family board game. My annoyance grew as it became clear that she was talking to a charitable organization that collected used items for resale. I donate frequently, but the phone solicitors that schedule the pickups are notoriously slow and meticulous. I expressed impatience.

Yet, my daughter persisted. When she finally came back to the game she said, a little sheepishly, I wanted to do it. The poor man sounded so discouraged, and he perked right up when I said yes. I'll put some things together for him. My annoyance disappeared and I was awe struck at her generosity of spirit. After all, what is 10 or 15 minutes effort to brighten someone's day, give to a good cause, and clean out a closet? My admiration for her good deed improved my spirit too.

Kindness and generosity are two of the universal virtues and strengths that researchers found were respected in almost every culture in the world. It feels good to give to others, and we admire others who do it. Scientists have also found that the sort of happiness that comes from small acts of kindness and generosity tends to spread from person to person. Each person who comes into contact with a happy person is 34% more likely to cheer up themselves.

You do not have to give away large sums of money to improve the world. My daughter reminded me that you can make a positive difference just by taking the time to listen to someone all the way through. In just seconds, you can give a compliment or a smile. Give generously of your time and your happy demeanor to improve your corner of the world.

Give to others for your happy life.
