Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #077- Fruits of Labor
September 02, 2010
Hello

Express your appreciation and gratitude for the labor of others with the fruits of your labor for your happy life.

Many times a day I realize how much my own life is built upon the labors of my fellowmen, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.

The first Monday in September is Labor Day in the US and Canada. Labor Day is an international holiday, although different countries celebrate it on different days. In any country, it is a great opportunity to think about how much of our lives are built on the labor of others. Our homes, clothes, cars, electronic devices, and food were most likely produced by others. Even less tangible benefits like our civil security and the traffic we do not fight on the roads because of people taking public transportation come to us through the labor of others.

Labor Day is also a good time to think about your own labor. We can get tremendous satisfaction from our work and from our accomplishments. Using our strengths to produce a worthwhile result can produce happiness through flow, the satisfaction of accomplishment, and the glow of knowing we helped someone else. Whether you labor with your hands and back or with your mind and pen/computer, work can make you happy.

It is also appropriate to think of the benefits we have all gained from organized labor. Although labor unions are often controversial, particularly in these challenging economic times, they have benefited our modern society greatly. From child labor laws, to the 8 hour work day, to higher wages and benefits for everyone overall, labor unions have made most of us more prosperous and our economies more stable . There are still parts of the world where child labor, long work days, and low wages that keep workers in poverty are still common. Often these countries are also more prone to civil unrest.

So, take a moment to appreciate and feel gratitude for the fruits of other's labor that you enjoy every day. Then think about the benefits you get from your own labor and follow Albert Einstein's example.
