Kind words make you happier and they make the person you say them to happier, doubling your happiness contribution to the world. As an added bonus, happiness is contagious, so the more you give away, the more comes back to you from your friends and neighbors. Kind words make your happy life bloom, just like fertilizer.

A Happy Life is like a garden in other ways too. We sow seeds of kindness and optimism and we harvest joy, creativity, beauty, and love. Author Marci Shimoff thinks that we can reap a lasting and pervasive sense of happiness that supports us no matter what our life circumstances. In her book, Happy For No Reason, she outlines 21 habits we can adopt to reach that abundant state. Marci uses the rooms of a house as a metaphor for the happy habits. In her metaphor, friends are the garden.
