Happy Life Tip of the Week, Issue #137- Catching Up
November 13, 2011
Hello Friends,

Practice frequent, small moments of happiness to get more of those moments that take your breath away.

Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

John Lennon

Life’s not the breaths you take,
But the moments that take your breath away.

George Strait

I am catching up on the Tip of the Week to you because my plans were disrupted by life over the last two weeks. Many people associate these life interruptions with tragic events or massive frustration, however, in my case, the interruption was joyous and took my breath away.

My interruptions were ordinary and expected. I had the opportunity to attend a professional conference and give a presentation and my daughter, who is a budding violinist in high school, had two concerts this week and a play performance at her school. I had planned my other commitments around these events, but in all cases, I was so overcome with joy and gratitude that I needed time to pause and enjoy my happy life.

Although I do practice gratitude and appreciation every day, I often find the process seems a little mechanical. I complement someone on what they are wearing, or make a list of the good things that happened to me and it brings a smile to my face, but not an overwhelming rush of emotion that takes my breath away. And yet, I find that the more I practice small, frequent, ordinary happiness, the more likely I am to experience those overwhelming, breath-taking moments when I deeply feel just how lucky I am and how wonderful my life is.

It is just as critical to our mental health to take the time to experience our joy as it is to take the time to experience and work through our grief. Our intense moments of joy can be just as enlightening and empowering. As I reflected back on my joy, I realized just how much happier I was overall for practicing appreciation and gratitude every day in small ways. The small decisions I make in those daily exercises, influence my actions and decisions towards more happiness and success without my awareness.

So I would like to share with you one of my favorite themes for developing frequent, everyday happiness; the Wisdom of Sunflowers. Most people smile spontaneously when they see sunflowers and that alone has made them a symbol of happiness. But, sunflowers are also one of the most successful life forms on the planet. The same characteristics that help sunflowers succeed in the natural world also help people succeed with happiness.

To help remind us all of the ordinary happiness from sunflowers, my husband John and I have put together a beautiful wall calendar called The Wisdom of Sunflowers, available on Café Press. It features John’s beautiful photography and my happiness tips in one convenient piece. We hope you will enjoy it.

If you go to the Café Press site, you will see that we are offering a free bonus gift to those that sign up for the newsletter. That gift is an electronic version of one of the calendar pages set up as a greeting card. As a Happy Life U member, you already have access to this card in the member area under Happy Signs. You might want to sign up anyway, because Café Press will also send you discounts and special offers that you can use at the Sunflower Shop, or anywhere on Café Press.

Whether you use the Wisdom of Sunflowers, or some other reminder,

Practice frequent, small moments of happiness to get more of those moments that take your breath away.

Remember to practice happiness by giving away the things you love and appreciate, like passing on the Tip of the Week!

Affirmation
I practice small, frequent, acts of happiness, appreciation, and gratitude every day. I know that frequent ordinary happiness leads to those extraordinary moments that take my breath away.

Journal or Meditation Question
When was the last time I experienced on of those peak moments of wonder, gratitude, or joy that took my breath away? What was I doing and thinking and who was I with? What am I doing now that I expect to bring me similar moments in the future?
