The Book, Happy For No Reason
If you only read one book on happiness, Happy For No Reason: 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out by Marci Shimoff would be a good choice.

Marci Shimoff lays out a happiness scale from Not Happy, to Happy with Bad Reason, Happy with Good Reason, and finally Happy with No Reason. People at the top of the scale manage to be sunny and positive no matter what the circumstances. She interviewed 100 of these people and looked for the things they had in common. And, what she found is very consistent with our philosophy here at Happy Life U. She found that happiness is a habit that can be learned.

Marci Shimoff defines 7 action areas, or steps, and breaks them down into 21 specific habits you can adopt to move you closer to the Happy for No Reason side of the scale. This book mixes practical “how to” guides with science, research, philosophy, and personal experiences into a comprehensive self help book. For example, she introduces the concept of Gratitude by telling a story about her experiences on a humanitarian mission in Tibet.

This is one of the few happiness manuals that also acknowledges the physical and nutritional aspects of happiness.  Marci Shimoff introduces the concept of Heart Math and nutritional supplements that prevent depression and support happy biochemestry.

The book is very readable and comprehensive. It covers a lot of the latest research findings and does a good job of finding areas of universal agreement, where spiritual thinking, common sense and science come together. The book is broken into good subsections, making it easy to read in short bursts. The mix of information and personal stories make the reading compelling to read all at once as well.

This book, read by the author is also available in audio versions. I found the audio version to be inspiring during my daily drive or exercise routine.
