Celebrate Earth Day With Good News and Good Feelings in Nature
Happiness, peace, harmony, beauty, and wonder all come from Nature with Love. Nature also brings us good news from renewal and recovery. We are happier when we savor these positive experiences of nature. And, when we understand and appreciate nature, we can also save the earth.
Happiness and Nature Nature and happiness have been linked since the dawn of time. When we are happy we feel sunny. We shoot for the stars when we follow our dreams. We climb mountains to reach our goals. When we savor the experience of Nature, we are happier.
The link between happiness and the peace and harmony of nature is so strong, that when happiness researchers want to induce happiness for an experiment, they do so by showing pictures of nature or animals playing. You can test the link yourself. Rate your current level of happiness on a scale of 1 to 10 and write it on a sheet of paper. Fold up the paper, and spend a few minutes thinking about your favorite experience in nature. Remember the feeling of the air on your skin, the smells and the sounds, as well as what you saw. When you are done, rate your happiness again and write the number on the outside of the paper- then compare. This same experiment has also been used to reduce heart rates, blood pressure and increase circulation.
From Nature With Love? Just like humans, Nature also has its destructive side. But, over the past 100 years, our appreciation and understanding of this side of nature that has helped us protect ourselves better from these destructive forces. Although natural disasters still occur, when we predict them and take protective action, the impact on human life drops dramatically. Now we know that our actions can also destroy nature. For example, scientists have shown that global warming is increasing the number and severity of hurricanes. Our appreciation, understanding, and action in harmony with nature can protect the earth and improve our lives on it.
Happiness and Problem SolvingAccording to positive psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman , our positive feelings have an evolutionary purpose. Just as our negative feelings- fear and anger- set off our fight or flight bodily systems, our positive emotions- happiness and love- set off our building and adapting bodily systems. The happier we are, the more creative we are and the better we are at solving problems that require thinking in new and different patterns.
If we are to collectively solve the issues of pollution and global warming, or even world peace and sustainable economies, we will need just this kind of creative thinking. There is another link between happiness and problem solving in the law of attraction. What we appreciate, appreciates. When we take the time to admire something and feel gratitude for it, its value increases in our eyes and we attract more of that value into our lives. By appreciating the earth and the value that nature has for us, we attract more nature and more solutions to preserve and protect nature in a harmonious way.
From Nature with Love This earth day, celebrate by appreciating the positive gifts from nature. Take a walk outside and savor the experience of the air on your skin and the fragrances of the season. Appreciate the peace of a quiet morning and the melody of a song bird. Let the sunshine improve your mood and the wonder of the stars lift your soul. And remember that these gifts come to you from nature with love. Then return that love by passing on the happiness and appreciation of nature and making sure that your community will have opportunities to enjoy nature for many years to come.
