Finding happiness in the news is important because so often we only focus on the negative events in the world. New research on how to be happy, events that cause happiness, unusually happy people, or events that call out for more happiness skills, all make the news sometimes. Dancing in the Streets over a Possible first Lady in Iran?Some are calling Zahra Rahnavard the Michelle Obama of Iran. Her husband,Mir Hossein Mousavi, is running for president in that country and is the first Iranian presidential candidate to put his wife in a central role. While people are not allowed to dance in public, the excitement and happiness is palpable whenever Zahra Rahnavard speaks. Read the full story on CNN.
Bhutan Serious About HappinessThe Himalayan country of Bhutan is serious about happiness. The fourth Dragon King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, invented the concept of the gross national happiness instead of the gross national product. He has continued a program of gradual modernization and globalization started by his father the 3rd Dragon King including joining the United Nations and moving the country to a democracy. Three years ago, he sent a draft constitution to every Bhutan citizen that moved the country to a democracy. Last year, he abdicated his throne to his son, also called Jigme Wangchuck, who held the first democratic elections. The new prime minister, Jigme Thinley, is working with the new King to refine the country’s guiding philosophy into what they see as a new political science that may help lead the rest of the world into peace and prosperity.
